Hon. Justice Chidiebere Uwa

Born on October 26, 1958 and hails from Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, Abia State. Her Lordship’s distinguished academic journey began at Westlands Primary School, Nairobi, Kenya, where she obtained the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) in 1972. She proceeded to Alliance Girls High School, Kikuyu, Kenya (1973–1978), before studying law at the University of Nairobi (1979–1980) and the University of Buckingham, England (1980–1982). She was subsequently called to the Nigerian Bar in 1983 after completing her legal training at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos. Furthering her academic pursuit, Her Lordship obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree from King’s College London, United Kingdom (1984–1985).

Her Lordship commenced her legal career in 1983 with the National Assembly, Lagos, where she served under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Upon completing her service, she transitioned into private legal practice with A. Njemanze & Associates (1986–1988). Her judicial career began in 1988, when she was appointed a Senior Magistrate Grade II in Imo State, later rising to Senior Magistrate Grade I (1989–1991). Following the creation of Abia State, she continued to serve in various magisterial capacities, including as Chairperson of the Juvenile Court (1991–1998), Chief Magistrate Grade II (1993–1996), and Chief Magistrate Grade I (1996–1998).

In recognition of her exemplary service and judicial acumen, Hon. Justice Uwa was appointed a Judge of the High Court of Abia State in 1998, a position she held until 2006, when she was elevated to the Court of Appeal. Over the years, she served in several divisions of the Court of Appeal, including Abuja, Ibadan, Ekiti, Ilorin, Lagos, Yola, and Kaduna Divisions.

Her Lordship has also held several significant roles within and outside the judiciary. She has served as Chairman and Member of various Gubernatorial and Legislative House Election Tribunals, contributing to the adjudication of electoral disputes in Nigeria. She was the Deputy Chairperson of the Magistrate Association of Nigeria, Abia State (1992–1995), Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Abia State (2001–2006), and a member of the National Association of Women Judges and the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) from 1998 to date.

In recognition of her distinguished judicial service and unwavering commitment to justice, Hon. Justice Uwa was appointed to the Supreme Court of Nigeria on February 26, 2024.
